Athabasca Glacier, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.
The very first time I drove from Calgary to Jasper, the Athabasca Glacier left an immediate and everlasting impression on me. Right before you see this magnificent 10,000 year old glacier, Highway 93 goes into a very slow right turn. It’s as if the road was constructed specifically to create the most jaw dropping effect possible. As a result the landscape starts to slowly pan across your windshield as you proceed to drive forward.
I caught myself audibly asking “how is this real?”
It is rather unfortunate that climate change has accelerated the receding of the glacier. It is currently losing about 5m a year and has already withdrawn well over 1.5 kilometers in the last 125 years.
