Hiking in the Canadian Rockies in the winter can definitely become a very involved and strenuous activity. The amount of gear you generally need to wear also increases due to the potential for extreme adverse conditions (deep snow, ice and high elevation winds dropping temperatures into the -40 Celsius range). However, if you feel the need to get outside and get some of that crisp mountain air, there are several easy, family friendly hiking options such as the Grassi Lakes trail in Canmore.

Grassi Lakes (Easy)

During the winter months the “hard” part of the Grassi trail loop (we have a better suggestion down below) is generally closed due to the icy conditions created by the waterfalls. However, the main 4.3km trail (round trip) remains open and is a relaxed, but constant, incline through a dense evergreen forest. The path is well kept, quite wide and very easy to navigate for all physical abilities. Despite the dense forest, great views of Ha Ling Peak, Miners Peak and the east side of Mount Rundle as well as the town below can be had at various points. The highlight, of course, will be the Grassi Lakes which look spectacular right at the start of winter and in the spring (before they freeze and as they thaw).

Parking

Given the popularity of this Kananaskis hike and the proximity to the Town of Canmore, the parking lot does tend to fill up by 11am so getting there a bit earlier would be advisable.

Gear

Whenever you are in the mountains you should always bring proper footwear (waterproof hiking boots) and, in this case, ice cleats. The trail does usually sport hard packed snow and if the temperature warms up enough that snow can easily turn to ice. It is definitely more convenient and a better experience to come prepared than to hit the ground from a standing position.

I also recommend dressing in layers which will help you stay warm and dry. I am a big fan of wearing a sun hoodie as my base layer. In combination with a good sun cap and sunscreen it will protect your face, neck and hands from exposure exceptionally well.

Needless to say, bringing water to stay hydrated in the dry winter conditions and a few snacks to keep you going is always a great idea.

Grassi Lakes (Hard)

If you are looking for a real workout and want to put in at least 20km, I would recommend parking in downtown Canmore where you won’t have any issues finding a parking stall. There are a myriad of trails all throughout the town and the surrounding areas which will link you into the Grassi Lakes trail. Once you navigate to the Grassi Lakes, make your way up to Whitemans Pond and continue a couple hundred meters more to the trailhead for Ha Ling Peak.

As per the map below, this will increase your workout by another 7km and 750m of elevation on its own. Needless to say, this is not a family friendly combination of trails (and proper gear is more than a suggestion…) but the experience is amazing and the views from the top of Ha Ling are fantastic.

Stay safe and enjoy!
