Let’s start off this quick blog entry by saying I am not a fan of square images. I understand the history of photography, especially in the 20′ and 30′, was heavily invested in square images. I know the images taken on the moon were square. Today, Instagram is heavily pushing the square aspect ratio yet again. And yes, there are various compositional and minimalist advantages to square photography. For this reason, despite my dislike of this particular aspect ratio, it is important to learn about it and extract as much valuable information as we can.
Therefore, in order to achieve optimal results, we have to look at someone who is the exact opposite of me and truly loves the square. AOWS shoots the vast majority of his photography in the square format. He further refines the minimalist tendencies of the square by also converting all his images into black and white. In that regard, perhaps it is his brilliant understanding of luminosity that draws me to his images more so than the aspect ratio. He does an exceptional job explaining his methodology and approach. His video is fluid, to the point and the best informational resource I have found on this medium.
